Preparation Is Everything

As another school year comes to an end, I am reminded of the importance of preparing for the year ahead. During my 30 years as an educator, a passage found in Mark 1:35–38 has served as a source of inspiration and motivation at the close of each school year.

"Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed."

The time Jesus spent in prayer prepared Him mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for the day ahead. As soon as He finished praying, and before the day had truly begun, He was met by followers who were searching for Him and demanding His attention. Yet Jesus was not distracted or overwhelmed by their concerns. He remained calm, focused, and committed to His purpose.

How often do our days begin with unresolved questions from the day before? How many times do those unanswered concerns create stress, anxiety, or emotional unrest? Too often, we allow our emotions—or the emotions of others—to dictate the course of our day.

Jesus modeled a different way of living. His time with God each morning enabled Him to stay focused on what mattered most, regardless of the demands, distractions, or pressures around Him.

We can and should follow His example by setting our minds and hearts on spiritual things each morning. Then, when our days become hectic, frustrating, or overwhelming, we can maintain the peace that surpasses all understanding. Others will notice the difference because our day began with prayer and preparation.

Preparation is everything.
